The smombie, this very dangerous behavior
A word formed from a smartphone and a zombie, the term smombie refers to a pedestrian who moves on the streets while staring at his phone, to the point of neglecting his immediate environment.
Scrolling outside like a zombie, it endangers his safety and that of others. You've probably seen someone cross the road while looking at his phone? A survey conducted by Dekra in 2016 in six European capitals shows that almost 17% of pedestrians are regularly distracted by their smartphones when they cross traffic lanes. Nearly 8% of pedestrians were also seen texting while crossing the street, according to this study. Dekra also reports these disturbing figures: "About 10% of fatal accidents on German roads are caused by pedestrians with inappropriate behavior". A pedestrian inattentive to his environment and crossing at the last moment can indeed cause irreparable damage. This person is a smombie. More and more present, this phenomenon is worrying all over the world.
How to fight against this phenomenon? In Hawaii, the mayor of Honolulu forbids its residents to cross the street looking at their smartphones. It is now an offense punishable by a fine of $ 35 or more if they reoffend. In some cities in China, there are sidewalks exclusively for smartphone users. The city of Augsburg, Germany, also tested another device in 2016. It consists of putting red lights on the ground to signal the arrival or not of a tram or a car. This idea was adopted in Bodegraven, the Netherlands and Tel Aviv, Israel.
